The sixth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Katyayani, the fierce warrior form of Goddess Durga, who symbolizes strength, courage, and protection. She rides a lion, radiating power, and is depicted with four hands, holding a lotus and sword while blessing devotees with fearlessness.
According to legend, sage Katyayan performed intense penance, desiring the Goddess as his daughter. Answering his devotion, the divine energies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva created her, and she was born in his home, hence the name Katyayani. When the demon Mahishasura threatened the gods and humanity, it was Maa Katyayani who engaged him in a fierce battle, ultimately destroying him and restoring peace.
This form of the Goddess represents the victory of good over evil and inspires devotees to face challenges with bravery and determination. Worshipping Maa Katyayani is believed to remove obstacles, grant inner strength, and fulfill sincere desires. She is also revered as the goddess of love and harmony, with many young devotees seeking her blessings for a happy and righteous marital life.
Rituals on the sixth day include offering honey, symbolic of devotion and sweetness, along with prayers and chanting of her mantras. It is said that meditating on her form not only brings material blessings but also leads the soul toward liberation.
Maa Katyayani’s story teaches that true power lies in courage and righteousness, and that divine protection always supports those who walk the path of truth.
