Vedant Nainani from Gujarat has been selected as one of the national finalists for the 2026 Mr. India Universe competition. The national finale of the competition is scheduled to take place later this year. At the culmination of the event, the new Mr. India Universe winner will be chosen.

Vedant Nainani is a fitness coach, engineer and aspiring entrepreneur who belongs to Gujarat and hails from Ahmedabad. Born and raised in Ahmedabad, Vedant’s formative years were shaped by football, discipline and a deep connection with the people who influenced his understanding of life. He completed his BTech in Computer Science and Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy), after securing an All India Rank of 858 in the general category in JEE Mains, including a 100 percentile in Mathematics. Today, he is building his career as a fitness coach while working towards his long-term aspiration of becoming a successful entrepreneur and eventually residing outside India.
Vedant’s early childhood briefly took him beyond India when his mother received a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship to continue her research in mathematics, prompting the family to move to Canada for a year. Although he was too young to retain memories of that period, the family eventually returned to Ahmedabad, where he completed nursery before beginning his formal schooling. He joined Riverside School in Ahmedabad, and it was there that he discovered football at the age of five—a sport that would go on to become one of the defining influences of his life.
From the very beginning, Vedant developed an extraordinary attachment to the game. Football became far more than a recreational activity; it became the organising force of his childhood. His days revolved around school and football, with regular training at Kahani Academy under coaches including Johnny and Shabaz. His dedication to the sport soon became an important part of his identity, and his years of training brought with them not only victories and trophies but also experiences that shaped his character.
After studying at Riverside until the fifth standard, Vedant made the decision to move to Eklavya School. The two institutions had markedly different approaches, with Riverside emphasising freedom and Eklavya being more academically rigorous. His decision, however, was driven primarily by his desire to remain close to his football teammates from Kahani Academy, many of whom studied at Eklavya. The move also brought him closer to Johnny, who became an important mentor and almost a second parent to him. Johnny’s philosophy of self-respect and personal responsibility left a lasting impression on Vedant, particularly his belief that respect for others begins with learning to respect oneself.

The football team itself became an extended family for Vedant. He travelled with his teammates to Goa and other cities for tournaments and also had the opportunity to visit DSK Shivajians in Pune, a club affiliated with Liverpool, where the young players trained and experienced what it was like to live and develop away from their families. Alongside the excitement of competition, these experiences taught Vedant valuable lessons about camaraderie, discipline and independence.
Football also taught him how to deal with defeat. Having experienced both victories and losses, Vedant gradually learned that failure was not an endpoint but part of the journey. One of his earliest significant losses affected him deeply, but Johnny’s reassurance that some matches are won and some are lost, and that one must continue regardless, gave him a perspective that remained with him. Another of Johnny’s teachings—“Life is a game of choices, choose wisely”—would eventually become one of the central principles of Vedant’s life.
That philosophy was put to the test when the COVID-19 pandemic brought football to an abrupt halt. Vedant was in the tenth standard when months without the sport he had built his identity around left a profound impact on him. During the same period, he experienced two deeply difficult personal events. His grandmother passed away, and witnessing the effect of her loss on his father changed his understanding of life and loss. Soon afterwards, his father was involved in an accident that resulted in a broken leg and a lengthy recovery. Seeing his father endure that difficult period, yet still smile at him from a hospital bed, gave Vedant a powerful understanding of resilience and strength.
With football unavailable and his routine disrupted, Vedant began struggling with his discipline and lifestyle. He spent increasing amounts of time gaming, consumed large amounts of junk food and had already developed a tendency to avoid school in favour of staying home and playing games. During this period, he gained close to 30 kilograms. It was Johnny who eventually confronted him about the direction his life was taking, asking him whether this was what he had been taught. That confrontation became a turning point.
Vedant began rebuilding himself from home, initially too insecure to enter a gym. At the same time, he devoted himself to preparing for JEE Mains. His physical transformation and academic preparation developed alongside one another, requiring discipline in areas where he had previously struggled. He eventually lost approximately 30 kilograms and achieved an All India Rank of 858 in JEE Mains, earning admission to NIT Trichy. Yet his initial transformation also taught him an important lesson: losing weight was not the same as understanding fitness. Having restricted his food intake without understanding proper nutrition and training, he had lost muscle along with fat and had moved from being overweight to being very lean.
His admission to NIT Trichy marked the beginning of another major chapter. Moving from Ahmedabad to Trichy introduced Vedant to a different state, city, language and culture, challenging him to adapt to an environment very different from the one in which he had grown up. During his first year, he began learning about fitness more seriously, shifting his focus from simply losing weight to understanding how to build his body properly. At the same time, he developed a close circle of friends, particularly among students from North India, who became an important source of companionship throughout his four years at college.
Football also returned to his life in a significant way as he joined the NIT Trichy football team. His dedication to the sport soon earned him a place at his first Inter-NIT tournament in Durgapur, where he was the only second-year student from the entire college to be selected. The experience reaffirmed the role football had played throughout his life. Even after years of change, it remained a constant source of motivation, escape and identity.
During his college years, football also provided one of his most memorable personal experiences. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Vedant was suffering from a 102-degree fever but was determined to watch his idol, Lionel Messi, play. After taking two paracetamol tablets, he sat down to watch the match, only to faint while making his way to the washroom. His friend found him and rushed him to hospital, and when he regained consciousness in the ambulance, his first concern was the match score. Messi’s eventual World Cup triumph carried a deeper meaning for Vedant, reinforcing his belief in perseverance, humility and continuing forward despite repeated setbacks.
His football journey continued to test and strengthen him. At an Inter-NIT tournament in Durgapur, his team suffered a painful penalty defeat in a qualifying match that Vedant had initially believed they had won. Yet the difference between that defeat and his earliest experiences of losing was significant. Years of competition had taught him to accept disappointment without allowing it to break him. The loss hurt, but he was able to move forward with a maturity that reflected how far he had come.
By this stage, Vedant had also achieved a physique that he could take pride in. Having experienced his own transformation, he began sharing his journey online. His progress attracted attention, and people began following him, reaching out with questions and seeking guidance. What began as a personal transformation gradually developed into a professional direction, leading Vedant to start coaching clients online and helping others work towards their own fitness goals.
His third and fourth years at NIT Trichy, however, brought challenges that went beyond academics, football or fitness. Vedant describes this period as one that changed him profoundly, particularly during his fourth year. Rather than allowing those experiences to define the rest of his life, he drew upon the principles that had guided him since childhood. Johnny’s words about life being a series of choices became meaningful in an entirely new way, reminding Vedant that even at difficult crossroads, the direction he chose would ultimately shape the person he became.
After completing his fourth year, Vedant chose to move forward and focus on building his future. His journey from a young footballer in Ahmedabad to an engineering graduate at NIT Trichy, and from a teenager who struggled with his lifestyle to a fitness coach who now helps others transform themselves, reflects a continuous process of change, discipline and self-discovery.
Today, Vedant stands at another beginning. With his engineering education behind him, his experience in football, fitness and personal transformation serving as the foundation of his outlook, he is working towards building something of his own. His aspirations extend beyond his present profession, with entrepreneurship and an international future forming part of his long-term vision. Through every stage of his journey, football has remained a constant, while the lessons imparted by his family, mentors, victories and setbacks have helped shape his understanding of resilience.
For Vedant, life has never been defined solely by the moments in which everything went according to plan. It has been shaped just as much by the decisions made at difficult crossroads—the decision to return to discipline, to rebuild his body, to pursue engineering, to return to football, and ultimately to keep moving forward. His story is therefore not simply one of academic achievement, athletic passion or physical transformation; it is a story of continually choosing growth. And as he enters the next chapter of his life, Vedant carries with him the principle that has accompanied him since his earliest years: life is a game of choices, and every new day offers another opportunity to choose wisely.
