Sanwaka Surong was crowned Miss Universe Meghalaya 2026 on the glitzy evening of May 1, 2026 at Lariti auditorium, Shillong. Alongside winning that glittering crown, she also earned the rights to represent the state of Meghalaya, at the most prestigious beauty pageant in the country – Miss Universe India, to take place on August 18, 2026 in Jaipur.

Sanwaka Surong is a communications professional, content creator and beauty pageant titleholder who hails from Shillong, Meghalaya. She holds a Master’s degree in Tourism and Travel Management and works as a Communications Coordinator at Hello Meghalaya, the state’s first government-owned OTT platform. Alongside her work in communications, she also anchors her own show, bringing stories from across Meghalaya to a wider audience. She is fluent in Khasi, Jaintia, Hindi and English, and has a passion for singing.

Sanwaka’s journey has been shaped by personal loss, resilience and the determination to build a life on her own terms. Losing both her parents at a young age was one of the most defining experiences of her life. At 18, she had to navigate life independently, taking on responsibilities that demanded maturity and strength. Rather than allowing this loss to limit her ambitions, she chose to move forward with courage and purpose, gradually building her own identity through her professional pursuits and personal achievements.
An important influence on Sanwaka’s outlook was her late mother, who would take her to orphanages during her childhood to distribute food and gifts to children. These visits left a lasting impression on her and helped shape her desire to use her experiences and opportunities to bring hope to others. Although she did not fully understand their significance at the time, those early memories became a meaningful part of the values she carries today.

Her journey in pageantry began several years before she won the title of Miss Universe Meghalaya 2026. She was a first runner-up at Miss Cherry Blossom and Miss Meghalaya in 2019, secured a placement at Miss Teen India International, and went on to win Sunsilk Mega Miss North East in 2021. After taking a four-year break from pageantry, she returned as a more financially independent and professionally established woman. This time, the experience held a deeper significance, as it reflected not only her continued ambition but also the personal growth and stability she had worked hard to achieve.
Winning Miss Universe Meghalaya 2026 marked an important milestone in Sanwaka’s journey, earning her the opportunity to represent her home state at the national finals of Miss Universe India 2026. For her, the achievement represented much more than a pageant title. It was a reminder of the distance she had travelled, from facing difficult circumstances at a young age to creating opportunities for herself through perseverance, professional growth and an enduring belief in her potential.
Beyond pageantry, Sanwaka has built a career that allows her to connect with people and share stories. Her work with Hello Meghalaya has given her the opportunity to explore the state, engage with its communities and showcase its culture, people and experiences. One of the most memorable chapters of her professional journey was her involvement in Meghalaya Diaries, where she worked as an anchor and travelled across the state to cover its diverse autumn calendar. From kayaking and off-road motorsports to literary festivals and concerts, the experience introduced her to different aspects of Meghalaya’s vibrant cultural and social landscape.

The assignment also brought her face to face with people from varied backgrounds, including writers, thinkers, performers and musicians. She interviewed speakers at literary festivals and had the opportunity to interact with artists whose work she had admired for years, including Jason Derulo, Nora Fatehi, The Script, Blue, Prateek Kuhad and Kanika Kapoor. These experiences broadened her professional horizons and gave her a deeper appreciation of the role communications can play in connecting people and sharing meaningful stories.
What makes this work particularly significant to Sanwaka is the opportunity to tell the stories of her own state. Through her work as an anchor and communications professional, she has been able to discover Meghalaya in new ways while bringing its people, experiences and cultural richness to a wider audience. Her career has thus become a source of both professional fulfilment and personal connection with the place she calls home.
Today, Sanwaka Surong’s journey brings together pageantry, communication and a strong sense of purpose. Her achievements reflect years of effort, the courage to begin again after setbacks and the determination to establish herself independently. As Miss Universe Meghalaya 2026, she carried these experiences with her to the national stage, representing a woman whose ambitions have grown alongside her life experiences and whose story continues to be shaped by resilience, hard work and the desire to make a meaningful contribution.
The competition – Miss Universe India, is owned by one of the biggest beauty pageant organizations in the world – the Glamanand Entertainment Pvt Ltd (popularly known as the Glamanand Group). The organization was established by its founder and president, Nikhil Anand in the year 2013 and gradually it became one of the leading beauty pageant producers in the world. At the conclusion of this year’s Miss Universe India competition, the reigning titleholder, Manika Vishwakarma from Rajasthan will crown her successor, who would later go onto represent India at the prestigious Miss Universe 2026 competition, scheduled to happen by end of this year in Puerto Rico.
